The Norwegian Open 2020 will not take place due to the increasing number of cases of the COVID-19 pandemic and the corresponding measures and regulations. The announcement was made earlier this morning on the official event channels. However, the event does not completely fall through. It was announced that on the same date and location an event with the name NOdalen Open, limited to 600 teams, will take place. With this, another heavyweight tournament falls from the event calendar, which has already been decimated with a few exceptions.
Already in the previous year, the Norwegian Open, one of the largest Agility tournaments in Europe, had to be canceled due to a severe and at that time hardly unknown bowel disease in dogs in the greater Oslo area. While the cancellation came relatively suddenly last year, it was foreseeable this year due to the worldwide rampant Covid-19 pandemic. The organizers stuck to the plan to hold the tournament for a long time, especially after the upward trend at the beginning of summer when the first easing occurred in Europe. At the same time, they wanted to wait until the end of August with the final decision. But the strong increases in recent weeks and the resulting restrictions at the borders and the specifications of the health authorities didn’t let much choice left.
The alternative event NOdalen Open, which will also take place from October 9th to 11th, is limited to 600 participants, while the Norwegian Open usually has no limit. In general everything will be a bit smaller at the NOdalen Open compared to the Norwegian Open. Nevertheless, three well-known judges from abroad have been invited. Sandra Deidda (ITA), Tamás Tráj (HUN) and Sari Mikkillä (FIN) will be the judges in October. Despite the two setbacks in the past two years, the ten-year anniversary event is planned to take place in 2021 instead of 2019.
