AWC 2024

AWC 2024 Recap Day 4: Germany back to its usual strength

Three runs were scheduled for this Friday. And two of them were again medal decisions. Namely the remaining two team runs in the Large and Small categories. And one in advance. Germany has made an impressive comeback. With the usual strength as we know from previous years.

But it all started with the first individual run of this tournament. Jeremy Manno set a challenging course for the Medium teams with many temptations and difficult sections. Even though more than half of the teams were eliminated, enough others showed that the course was solvable. Above all, the reigning European Open winner Martina Magnoli Klimesova with Malinka from Italy. With plenty of experience, she ran a confident run and pushed Lenka Fuksova and Hippie out of first place. A very close win with a lead of 0.06 seconds. It will probably not be the last World Championship at which we will hear this name. Malinka only recently turned three. For Lenka Fuksova, who previously looked to many as the sure winner of this Jumping, second place is of course still a great result. And of course also a good starting position for the Agility run on tomorrow evening. Silas Boogk and Beam came third, 0.40 seconds behind.

Aneta Obrusníková experienced a rollercoaster of emotions on her birthday. Yesterday she had probably celebrated one of the greatest successes in her Agility career, today she was eliminated with all three dogs. This did not leave her unscathed. The birthday serenade in the hall did not change that too. Maria Sori and Daim also had little to laugh about. Yesterday she had the second best time in the team competition, but today her medal dreams in the individual ranking were postponed after a disqualification shortly before the end. A total of 19 teams remained faultless. This definitely promises to be an exciting final.

The Large Team final was then followed by a highlight of the day, one of many highlights this week. And the starting position after the Jumping with Germany, the British and Spain in the top three couldn’t have been better. The three were also the only teams with a clean record without any mistakes from the first round. Unfortunately, the Spanish were unable to capitalize on their good starting position and swapped fifth place with the Dutch. They got the three faultless runs they needed today. And the set time was also a hurdle for the British, which received in the Agility run a mistake. But it was enough for second place. Although the lead had melted to 2.25 seconds. That took some pressure off the German team. Even with one mistake and fast runs, a win would still be possible. The two starting runners Anne Lenz and Tobias Wüst put in two great faultless runs. However, Mona Grefenstein and Sea, in third place, made two mistakes. It was therefore clear that Max Sprinz and Make had to complete a run with a maximum of one fault. The question of the number of faults was irrelevant, however. The team ran a confident clean run and secured Germany’s first gold medal of the tournament.

Then there was still a decision to be made. The team competition in the Small category. The Small teams had a day’s break without runs. Here, too, the starting position was exciting. Finland was the last team to start. Germany was the second-to-last team. And Norway, with the reigning world champion Kjersti Jorgensen, was the third-to-last. The British and Belgium also had no faults in the first run and were still in a promising position. But the course had its pitfalls. Of the teams mentioned, only Germany and Belgium were in the top 5 at the end. The latter made it onto the podium despite two faults and a slight overtime. However, only in second place. They had to let the Hungarians overtake them. The medal also seemed to be a long way off, with four teams still to go and the team currently in second place. When the British and Norwegians also failed on the course, the medal was within reach. Germany again completed three clean runs on the green grass and took the lead. And the many Belgian fans who had travelled there had to worry about their medal at the home World Championships. And Germany also had to worry about being in the lead and stay there in the end. The Finnish team is known for being very reliable and having strong nerves. However, Jessica Kock, Iida Vakkuri and Sanni Kariniemi were all eliminated. And that meant that Germany had another gold medal to celebrate. And at the same time, they took a huge step towards victory in the overall medal table.
