AWC 2023: Veronica Odone becomes World Champion from 16th place

The sport of Agility writes its own stories. This also applies to the final decision at this year’s World Championship. Italian Veronica Odone wins the AWC in the Large category. And this from 16th place in Jumping. The close gaps in Jumping and lots of mistakes and disqualifications make this possible – alongside an impressive run in which everything really went right. Of the 131 teams that started, 65 teams did not reach the finish without elimination. And of the remaining 65, only 20 teams are without mistakes. The trend continued until the very end.

Second behind Veronica Odone is Brit Naarah Cuddy with Lemon. Also a little special story within these exciting World Championships. Lemon had an unfortunate fall at the slalom entrance in the first team run. Naarah Cuddy stopped the run and later, with the team’s agreement, forewent the second team run in order to give Lemon enough rest, so that she could attack even more in the Individual tournament. A decision that has now more than proven itself. The Brit loses only position to Veronica Odone in the second run. The gap after both runs is 0.64 seconds.

Richter-Sallay Zsófia Timea with Rira from Hungary comes third. Started from 22nd place. She probably wouldn’t have expected that she would end up running for a medal despite the handicap from Jumping. But she also showed an impressive performance and mastered Petra Vyplelová’s difficult course without any mistakes. And this with the eighth-best running time. The best running time went – once again – to Jessica Ajoux with Hallelujah from the USA. Sadly she was eliminated already in the Jumping run.

And then we have to talk about France. The World Championship got off to a rather mixed start. But when four French teams appeared in the top 20 on Saturday morning – 3 of them even in the top 10 – hopes of a medal naturally grew again. But it just wasn’t meant to be this year. All four ran great runs, but the necessary luck was missing. This happened to many others too. For example the two remaining Germans in Top 10, Mona Grefenstein and Max Sprinz. Or Lucie Glejdurová. We can’t leave the Czech woman unmentioned here. She runs really fast runs with both dogs and narrowly fails both times with each one mistake. Otherwise that would have been a safe medal for her. A little fun fact on the side. Both of their dogs end up with the same overall time.
