AWC 2023: Norway’s October fairy tale

The starting position for the Small Individual Final didn’t promise too much. One drama followed the other and the rankings were thrown up a notch. The big finale probably started with the run by the Swede Felicia Ferm and Gigi with start number 37. Of course, out of medal range. But the run was more than a medal worth. The time of 36.23 seconds was never beaten and the Swede won the Individual Agility run. But the audience in Liberec and in front of their home screens waited eagerly for the last starters. And there were many who still had hope for a medal.

Listing these individually would go beyond the scope. Nevertheless, we would like to mention a few names that shaped Saturday evening. The experienced team of Pavol Vakonic and Meryl ran a fast, clean run that ultimately took them from 17th place to 6th place. Another would be Silas Boogk with Gadget. There was a big comeback needed from 15th place. But his run ended like many others before him – and after him – at the slalom entrance. A quick 90° angle entrance. The next team Svetlana Kreslina and Chi also failed at the same place. The Frenchman Maxime Parraud with Cute then set another new best time. 5th place for him in the end.

Conni Raschbauer and LeGo weren’t quite able to keep up with the pace of the others. Probably because of a fall before the last jump. Maybe one of the best scenes of this World Championship. She saved this little mishap with a lot of fight and effort and LeGo cleared the final hurdle even without Conni at his side. However, the Austrian can look back on a more than successful World Championship with four clean and fast runs. In the end it was 9th place for her. Stefanie Simson, the reigning world champion to date, ran a fclean run too. She narrowly missed the podium with fourth place.

Then Tobias Wüst with Dörte was at the start. These two also had some catching up to do after the first run. This turned out to be an even more difficult task shortly after the start. Dörte took a detour during a jump. Despite the detour, he ran an acceptable time which at least meant he was in the lead for the time being. But due to the detour and the deficit from the Jumping run, the medal was in risk. Especially since at this point there were still 7 fast teams up to run Anders Virtanen’s course. Among others, the Norwegian Eli Beate Sæther with Xera. And how they tackled this course. While almost all other teams sent their dogs into the slalom, the Norwegian chose the variant of a front change. One that was also timed perfectly. Her run meant the lead.

Both Martin Reid and Oleksandra Ivaschenko subsequently failed at the slalom entrance. They also sent the dog into the slalom. This meant that both Tobias and Eli Beate Sæther’s chances of winning a medal increased rapidly. The next ones who also didn’t finish their run were Claudia Schwab and Ellie. The Sheltie girl took a jump from the wrong side. The next one at the start failed on the dogwalk. Namely Mark Herfert and RêV. It was already clear that Eli Beate Sæther was at least guaranteed the bronze medal. And a Norwegian was still at the start. Kjersti Jørgensen with Agi. When the Norwegian crossed the finish line first with a time of 36.47s, there was already a party atmosphere in the Norwegian sector. Two medals that were already guaranteed. And by the time Renan Campos with Ice run into a disqualification, there was no stopping anymore. It’s an evening that Norwegian Agility World probably never will forget.
