The European Open 2021 will definitely not take place this year. The organizer from Portugal announced last week that they saw no possibility of holding the tournament this year. However, without really discussing this with the FCI in advance. In the official rejection, they wanted to postpone the European Open in Portugal to 2022. An event which was already promised to Belgium a few years ago. On Saturday at the FCI Agility Delegate meeting, which was held virtually due to the Covid-19 situation, the definitive cancellation followed for this years event and also Portugal as the organizer in 2022.
There will be no replacement event this year, nor will Portugal be awarded the contract for 2022. They were hoping for a situation similar to that applied for the 2020/2021 World Agility Championship in Estonia. At that time, the successor countries Russia and the Czech Republic, as well as the FCI agreed to a postponement of one year. Portugal’s request was not taken into account for various reasons. The European Open 2022 in Belgium has been confirmed for July 28th to 31st.
